Most, if not all of the unclaimed money holding authorities have different legal and processing requirements. Typically though you will need to present certified copies of your details to fulfil at least two identification criteria. Firstly, to prove ownership of funds, a connection to the original postal address that is relevant to the claim must be established, and secondly proof of identity.

Proof of identity documentation could be such as a birth certificate, driver’s licence, passport or other identity card. Examples of an acceptable address connection could be a driver’s licence, rates notice, utilities bill, and financial institution statement, correspondence from an accountant or solicitor for instance.  Note: for deceased estates, a certified copy of the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration must also be supplied.

Certified copies are required to ensure that all original documents are genuine and can be used to support your claim. A certified copy is a copy of original papers that has been notorised as a “true and correct copy” by a Justice of the Peace or similar. Doctors, Lawyers, Accountants and some Public Servants can be used in some cases to certify documents.  However each holding authority may have differing acceptable persons for document certification.

Throughout the whole claims process we will keep you updated at all times.  If the money is located in Australia you could expect approximately 6 to 8 weeks.  Otherwise if the funds are located overseas it could take a number of months. Keeping in mind at all times that we are dealing in most cases with Government institutions that all have different processing deadlines which are out of our control.

We understand that this out of all questions asked is of greatest concern to our clients.  We have established procedures and strict protocols to protect both you and us and provide transparency and peace of mind.  For instance, our Bank does not allow withdrawals to be made from the Lost Money Detective Trust account unless a copy of signed client authority has been submitted to the Bank prior to withdrawal request.  Mandatory insurances and audit programs are also in place again for protection and transparency.  At NO time throughout the entire claims process will we ask for your Bank account details. In fact we will issue a cheque to you direct when your funds have been recovered, so you have complete control.

You really have nothing to lose. If the funds are never recovered you simply don’t pay a cent. We take on the risk as we only get paid on results, a ‘no win, no fee’ basis.  For your peace of mind we will supply this to you in writing.

There are no ‘out of pocket’ expenses to reclaim your lost funds, and you will not be asked throughout the entire process for any payment whatsoever.  Fees are only paid when your monies have been successfully reclaimed and are deducted from the proceeds of the claim.

When we receive claim monies from the relevant holding authority, the funds are deposited into our trust account (in the your/owner’s name).  The Bank then checks to see if they have an ‘Authority to Act’ signed by the client on file.  (This is signed by the client at the beginning of the process enabling the Lost Money Detectives © to act on their behalf to reclaim the lost funds).  If the Bank does not have an ‘Authority to Act’ on file, no monies will be released until it is supplied. Our fee is then deducted, and a cheque for the remaining balance is forwarded to you.  In all cases, a full report will be provided containing the known details of the source and nature of the funds.

First and foremost, if this company has asked you for your bank details so that they can ‘deposit’ funds directly to your account; this should ring warning bells. At NO time throughout the entire claims process will we ask for your Bank account details. The unclaimed money recovery process does not require  your bank details (unless you stipulate that you prefer a direct deposit of your reclaimed funds).  In fact we will issue you a cheque so that you can bank your funds directly into your own account.

Then there are just the basic questions to ask any prospective company such as:

  • What is the guarantee that I will get my funds from the Company once they have been reclaimed? What protections are in place?
  • If the funds are never recovered and I have hired the Company, am I still charged any fees?
  • How and when are your fees paid?
  • How much experience do they have in this field of work? (We have over 30 years in claims Management experience)

Check the credentials, standing and auditing requirements of any company you are considering to appoint as custodian of your money.

Finally and in many cases most importantly, are they ‘a good fit’ for you? Do you feel comfortable with them, their credentials, their answers to the above questions etc? In other words are you comfortable appointing them as custodians of your money? If so that’s great, go for it….if not, we would be happy to assist and would welcome the opportunity to reclaim your lost funds. Just contact us directly on the details supplied below.

If you receive a letter, but are not the rightful owner of the unclaimed funds, please let us know. We will update our records to ensure that no further correspondence is directed to you. If you know how to contact the rightful owner (or the next of kin), please advise us so that we can correspond with him or her, or if preferred, forward our letter to the owner directly.

That’s a simple answer; the funds will normally stay in a non – interest bearing account and in essence will remain unclaimed. Worst of all though, depending on what authority holds the funds, each is different, and after a certain period of time the unclaimed funds will be absorbed into the endless pit of ‘consolidated Government Revenue’.  In other words….the Government gets its, and it’s GONE!!!!.
