Woman discovers $100,000 in unclaimed property

A Bethesda woman is celebrating a recent discovery of more than $100,000 dollars in unclaimed property. When Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot’s office first contacted the woman regarding the bank account, she was in disbelief.

The finding tops the list so far this year in terms of unclaimed property worth.

Franchot says the state’s database of unclaimed property includes more than 80,000 accounts, worth more than $61 million, so everyone should search the list for their name.

“The website is updated weekly, so check the website, look out for a postcard from our office,” said Joseph Shapiro, assistant comptroller for communications.  “This is your money and we want to get it back to you.”

Unclaimed property accounts include items ranging from jewelry to ashes.
